The tables below show you lists of software that I installed on my PC. The package name helps you to install the application via Synaptic (SystemAdministrationSynaptic Package Manager). The linked websites provide additional information like screenshots or manuals.

I wrote this list in 2007 while using Ubuntu Linux 7.04 (Feisty Fawn).

XCHM is an application to view Microsoft Compressed HTML Help files.

kolourpaint

A free and easy-to-use software for painting and editing image files.

gimp

The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a comprehensive raster graphics editor application.

octave

Octave is a free application for performing numerical computations. It is mostly compatible with MATLAB.

gfortran

The GNU Fortran (GFortran) compiler is an application to compile fortran77, fortran95 and parts of fortran2003 source codes.

glipper

Glipper is a clipboard utility for the GNOME panel, that allows you cache text and reselect it for pasting.

k3b

Free Application for burning CD’s and DVD’s that was designed for KDE (K Desktop Environment).

gparted

GParted is the GNOME Partition Editor application that helps you to create, destroy, resize, move, check and copy partitions, and the file systems on them.

gnome-art

Gnome-art is a small tool that helps you to download and install desktop themes and backgrounds from the GNOME Art Website.

nautilus-open-terminal

This nautilus plugin allows you to open terminals in arbitrary local paths and on SSH servers by using the context menue.

nautilus-script-manager

This nautilus extension allows you to apply own scripts to selected files via the menue of the right mouse button.

msttcorefonts

An easy way to install many of Microsoft’s TrueType core fonts (like 'Comic Sans MS', 'Courier New', 'Georgia', 'Verdana', 'Times New Roman' and 'Arial') on Linux.

xnest

Xnest opens a window that works like another screen. That allows you for example to take screenshots form the login window.

wine

This commandline application allows you to execute programs on linux that were originally written for Microsoft Windows.

dvdbackup

Dvdbackup is a commandline tool to create backups of DVD’s.

pdftk

This commandline tool comprises many functions like joining or decrypting PDF files.

xpdf-utils

This package allows you (in your terminal) to convert PDF files to PostScript/text files (pdftops/pdftotext), to extract PDF document information/images (pdfinfo/pdfimages) and analyse the used fonts (pdffonts).

mmv

Mmv is a commandline program to move (mmv) / copy (mcp) / append (mad) / link (mln) multiple files.

rkhunter

This commandline tool scans for rootkits, backdoors and possible local exploits.

chkrootkit

This program for the commandline helps you to check your system for known rootkits.

Konqueror is a web browser, file manager and file viewer that was designed for KDE (K Desktop Environment)
